In the early days of setting up shop, we happened to meet someone who took a keen interest in what we were up to and how we were planning to go about things. A mentor in the true sense of the word, he asked us in the middle of our first meeting:
“So what’s your market size?”
Boy, didn’t we know the answer to that!
We jumped headlong into offloading our spiel on market segmentation, demand-supply, desired targeting and the like.
He stopped us mid-way and quipped:
“Don’t you think the answer to that should be every wall that’s out there?”
(Note to the mentor: If you’re reading this, “Thank You”. I guess we never said it before in those many words. :))
Now that we had a way clearer idea of what we were going for, the obvious next step was talking to the people in charge of those walls. And talk to them we did.
Here’s what we found:
NO ONE ACTUALLY HATES ART. IN FACT, MOST PEOPLE LOVE THE IDEA OF SURROUNDING THEMSELVES WITH GOOD ART.
But then comes the block: “Wow, that calls for quite a significant investment actually.”
And then, the knockout punch: “What if I grow out of it a year down the line? Then I’m sort of stuck with it, no? Maybe I need to think this through some more.”
