About
Subhash Vyam is a Pardhan Gond artist from Madhya Pradesh. A master sculptor known for his evocative wooden sculptures, he made the transition to two dimensional paintings after one of his ink drawings was awarded the Rajya Hastha Shilpa Puraskar by the Govt. of Madhya Pradesh in 2002. Primarily working with ink on canvas and paper, Subhash’s favourite theme is aquatic life. Inspired by his wife and fellow artist Durgabai’s vast reservoir of folktales, Subhash started incorporating scenes and characters from these narratives into his work. Together, they worked on an iconic wall installation at the 2018 edition of Kochi Muziris Biennale where they depicted a Gond folklore using plywood instead of conventional frescoes.
